Love to craft dolls. This one entirely made by hand

I used scrim and vintage lace, painted the face and torso.
She sits on a pile of books or on the bed.
I have made these to hang on a wall above a bed, as guardian angels.
Sometimes I feel I need to make dolls, and then I am satisfied for a while.

Phone helper project

This is embarrassingly easy.
I always save the cut-offs of paper and other scraps.
Tear with a ruler to deckle edges and stack in a little pile
Not too thick. Different sizes fine.
Staple close to top to hold together.
Now the trick, run the sewing machine along the top of the pile, no thread in machine.
This will perforate paper for easy tear offs. Just fold and tear, when you write a phone message or a shopping list or number.
Make cover:
tear scrap fabric as long as front of tablet, fold in thirds, glue one third to back.
Attach trims to front, sew or glue along top of pad.
Attach small loop to back so it can be held or pulled from under a mess, like near my phone.

I do re-cycle and make lots of little phone helpers.
Made them forever and decided to gussy them up just a bit.
Soon as I take some pics I will post the project.
Meanwhile if you want to collect stuff, need glue, sewing machine and scraps cut off various papers like ledger or printer sheets, I always cut off the plain parts if I print something.
Also fabric and trim scraps. Small bits.

I have to swim in my master class most of the day so it will be later.
See if you can guess the item.

Valentines galore

had the 3 little girls and their Mum over for another craft day.
I pulled out all my boxes of buttons, trinkets, feathers, flowers, trims etc. and let them go.
I had sewn the blank felt hearts, they made Monks cord hangers, and glued all the stuff on.
I did not help them design so they are all their own creations.
Good job girls!

Found box in Provence so fixed it up with french book pages, fabric collage and an embroidered word.
Inside find a bit of lace, yes I do have quite a bit.
Then I made a sweet concertina Paris book with stamping, pictures and more.
Maybe I will do a project for the book?

Lunch with Disney

Had a glorious lunch at the Aulani Disney resort on the ocean, here in Oahu.
Day was perfect and kiddos enjoyed the fun.
No rides here, just water-ways and a tropical lagoon setting.
Lovely artwork, Murals and sculptures, all with Polynesian stories and themes.

Love in the window

A little project for a Valentine.

Put it in a window or add to a greeting card for a pretty gift.
So easy and yet effective.
Using a sheer background shows off the heart nicely.
Here is what I used
organdy square,
burlap cut to heart.
torn toile ribbon,
small scrap of red ticking,
scrap of torn scrim
a word,
I embroidered mine but you could stamp it or cut from an old card or something.
Dark color sewing thread.
Layer and sew together to form an applique, tie a one loop bow with the toile and sew to the heart.
Voila! Hope you create some.

Do you want to see if we really use special equipment in the studio?
I am curious myself. Wonder what others find helpful.
Here is a traveling sewing bag I especially like.
Took it to quilt festival and found it perfect to hold all my tools.
I noticed my students taking photos of it inside and out.
Bit of a challenge to put this sort of Zip in, it curves around and has to open in two.
I did it by hand first and then machine.
Added the trim by hand.
I had sewing stickers, and they were glued on to embellish.
I did a frayed applique technique to decorate the outside.
This is a roomy 16x12" open

How about a change of color?
I am inspired by my ocean surroundings, and wish I could create everything I see there.
The Pacific is a deep blue/green further south around New Zealand I notice it looks green and almost grey.

Pouch is silk with applique.
Cuff is lace and trims, flowers and beads.

Realized I needed more little gifts so sewed the French Sachets up last night.
Used old sheeting fabric.
The lavender soap bag has some old Val lace to close it with. Hard to find these days.
Made the ruffled lavender bag in the style of French laundry bags.
And made a bunch of simple lavender drawer sachets to enclose with gifts.
Used nice fresh lavender bought in Texas hill country.

The journey

It captures a long goodbye as the ship is about to sail away.
I used old papers and images I found in a musty book store in France.

Tiptoe around a burlap stocking.

Here are some tips to make your own stocking.
I made this easy with a contemporary look.
Enlarge or reduce my pattern.
Cut 2 burlap and 2 from muslin.
Cut 4" strip of green print for the cuff
Decorate the front of the stocking how you like.
Stack the pieces --- burlap, muslin, muslin, burlap, front is right side up.
Serge or zigzag all around edges except for top.
No need to turn, the look is clean and modern.
Fold cuff in half and fit to size of top, join and press.
Slip inside stocking, raw edges even.
Sew.
Turn to outside and hand sew down to hold.
Add a hanger and any decorations you like.
Now go make one and show me yours.

Little French sap bucket made from old sheet music.

Here is the pattern and a couple of finished pictures.

You need sturdy paper and a label.
Glitter glue and some thin wire for handle.
Tacky glue for construction.

To make the bucket, fold top to outside a cm or so, glue.
Fold sides to center back, overlap and glue.
Fold bottom about 2 cm. to back and glue that.
Add the label or use mine.
Spray whole thing with glitter glue in a translucent color.
Punch small holes in sides at top and thread through a wire hanger.
Hang somewhere with candy canes or straw like I used here.

Festival overview

This is a gift I made for my teen grand daughter, matches her bathroom.

Quilt show:
My classes were good, not great!
I did not see any new ideas in patterns or decor.
Lots of advances in machines and technology for quilters were on display.
Need a big house for a lot of them.
Disappointed in the fabrics, mostly hand dyed and batik, not the pretty prints and French fabrics I enjoy.
I was so busy teaching I could not take a class myself, cannot comment on those.
I think overall, the show needs to attract our young people more, update trends and re-think projects for our busy lives.
This is one person's opinion.
Comment if you also attended the show, what are your thoughts?

Cut a piece of fabric, I used chintz.
5 x 20 Fold into three, 4 inches and 5.5"
Sew first row stitching along each side to hold together.
Raw edges will be showing.
Assemble the trims as shown.
I printed French Laundry sign from the calendar I made last year.
Cut a small doily into three and place as shown, note one piece is glued to the bottom of a tag.
Thanks to Rhonda for that.
Make the patch and sew to the top .
Stitch around all sides of pocket again.
Lace edging is nice along both top, and pocket.
Add a button to the tag.
Stitch two pieces of twine to top for a hanger.
Also sew some seam binding to pocket sides. Let them dangle.
Catch the tag string on the inside of the pocket and add a few stitches to hold the doily , if needed.
Above is another version. Put soap or hand cream inside the pockets.
Pretty cool gift.

One for each chair at Thanksgiving table.
Fit words to theme.
I have used Bonne Nuit, and Happy birthday.
This is for a daughter who likes the phrase I used.
Find the letters you want, spread with tacky glue and then dust with silver glitter.
Hem a piece of burlap on each side.
Add long muslin ties to the ends
Glue on the sentiments, and enjoy.
In a guest room Bonne Nuit would be pretty draped across the pillow.
Recently I made one with purple glitter, Lavender and Lace.

Old jeans make-over

I made a book with pages for sketches and ideas .
Pages are watercolor paper.

Used some denim and added a scrambled quilt on one side. It has beads, fibers, findings and bits and pieces.

I like to use what I have, not much available here in the Islands except glorious inspiration all around.
This is my ocean and the reef.

This journal is filled with coffee stained, blank pages.
Made from rustic French homespun, the cover wraps around.
I used French linen to crochet the wrap cord.
Inside I embroidered the words, 'remember me'. The wrap cord has a brass tag with Paris 009, stamped on. Thanks to Rhonda for that.
Then it has layered linen, organdy and lace decorating the flap.
Size is 9x6" Oh yes and I have hand sewn the binding.

This can hang on a nail in the workshop to hold small measuring implements.
I put some of my collection inside. They were found years ago in a wooden box in NZ.
Even included the little blue marking pencil that I have tied on the handle.

Victorian project

To get started with Xmas gifts or tree ornaments.
My easy cornucopia Victorian style.

Cut a square of lace or fabric and one of linen.
Sew around edge few times.
Fold on diagonal where pin is and sew.
Add ribbon hanger to back.
Decorate how you like, I used beads, more ribbon and chenille.
Tucked a handmade bloom into the opening.
In Victorian times they would be filled with treats like small candy or pennies and little booklets.

Rasta duck

This Rasta duck is one, he is happy to sit near me when I work.
Quacks if he needs attention.
Has a beaded fiber tail and head gear, Rasta style.

I embroidered the words on the angel dress by hand.

Dancing lace

One of the lectures I will be giving at Quilt festival will be the use of lace, how to collage and layer it.
This pillow top will be one item, have to make some more examples and will show them later.
The dancer is surrounded by ribbon embroidery.

Yes I have danced all my life, all kinds, like jazz, tap, ethnic dance like this, and ballet.
Like to sing and have been in some groups, in the back , way back, hmmm!
So I hope the dance and music in my background show in my art.

I included a paper rose with jewel on petal, burlap and tulle behind it.
Box lined with music and covered with old lace.
I padded the lid and used some really old gimp and chenille.

Before I eat it all.
My version of this delight I found in some parts of France.
Simply Blancmange made with low-fat milk.
Fresh raspberries with sprinkle of brown sugar.
In a bowl with a dash of Fleur de sel I picked up in Revel, France.
I needed the bit of salt, prevents me getting muscle cramps when I swim.
Oh Yum!

Cushion from Mirepoix

Made this boudoir pillow with textiles I found at the great flea market in Mirepoix.
That's in the Midi-Pyrenees. The best.
The silk print was there, had to have help locating it but after a big search grabbed some.
A couple of friends made off with a bunch too.
So this is the first project and more are coming down the line.

Burlap french style

The baskets are for the dinner table to hold serviettes etc. or to hold books and mail or whatever one likes.
Lined with French ticking. Three sizes.

I saw the old terracotta pots just waiting for a little fix up.
You know I am the gardener here where I reside.
Love to make things look interesting and useful as well.

Burlap is good

I have made similar card holders, for years.
They work in paper or fabric.
This year it is burlap.

To make cut rectangle 9x6".
Cut one each linen and burlap.
Fold in half and press crease. Trim off one side on diagonal. Right to crease.
Sew together around all sides and sew on a patch or other embellishment.
Sew around again and catch 12" ribbon on back in middle. (Back tie.)
Sew lace or other trim to the diagonal edge.
Tie a one loop bow with another piece of ribbon and hand sew in place with a button, this goes on the front at the corner.
If you make one I would like to see it.

Decoration

From our little get together yesterday.
With all the chatting I actually did make my book

Made for some friends.
We are having a workshop get together today.
I will do some steam punk and will see what they create.
The books are made from ephemera I collected in France.
I hand bound them with linen found in a flea market, included a piece of lace and an old sepia postcard.
Hope they like them.

Little talk about lace.
I am not an expert, but have dabbled in it all my life.
Even made lace years ago.
If lace is bought in France it can come across the pond from England, and often does.
Much of machine made french lace is created on looms in Lyon.
A dying art, by the way.

Lace also arrives in France from Switzerland and Belgium, probably other countries too.

I was asked about netting lace from France, almost gone now, and you know why, the net rots.
If you find it, usually is a scrap, and with rips in it.
Now villagers hold onto good pieces and charge a fortune.

The lace I purchased was usually thrown in a big plastic sack. I had to take the lot.
So mine is a mix of all sorts.
I am putting it in bunches of similar kinds.

Don't tell which is me.

I am working on lace, bigger job than I thought.
Making sure it is laundered and pressed if need be.

I have way too much lace after cleaning my studio.
So I am going to put together bundles and will sell them.

IQA, International Quilt Association, has asked me to participate in a wall quilt auction, and exhibit.
I am flattered and excited.
Have to hurry and create.
